Greetings Family and Friends,
We have a new development in the seemingly never ending "Devil Bug Saga". The wound area on the bottom of Monette's foot has yet to heal completely (it's been 10 months now) but it is almost completely covered over with new skin. The remaining area is about the size of your index fingernail. Unfortunately the extensive damage caused by the original infection has created a situation with her "Big" and second toe known as Hammertoe. This condition causes the toes to curl up at the joint and it is now making it difficult to wear shoes since the toes protrude upward and the skin wears off on the tops of the toes due to contact with the shoe material. Although this is not a particularly uncommon affliction it can only be corrected with surgery. Soooooo, as you may have guessed, that is the next event in our lives here in Payson, AZ. The date for surgery is July 9, 2010 and it is out-patient so she will be home the same day. The recovery time is six weeks. Four of those weeks are "non-weight bearing" which means crutches and the wheelchair to get around. The last two weeks are rehabilitation for walking and balance control. After that period of recovery she should be as mobile as she can be and we hope to resume our travels for a couple of months at the end of the summer. Although surgery is never anyone's favorite activity at least we have a plan to finally bring this ordeal to an end and resume "Living our dream one mile at a time". I will provide updates as the latest chapter of this saga unfolds and please know just how much your concerns and well-wishes expressed over the course of this ordeal have meant to us. We love you all and consider ourselves the luckiest folks on earth to have you as family and friends.
Dave and Mo
